Music

Intention

High quality music education is an entitlement for all our children. It is our intention for all children to have spent at least 3 years learning either a string or brass instrument by the time they leave to go to high school. However, the essential disciplinary knowledge that the children need in order to access that instrumental tuition begins in the Early Years. Each child has a musicianship lesson that teachers them the fundamental musical elements of pulse, rhythm, pitch, and reading notation that they need in order to progress as musicians. Our curriculum develops children’s confidence through performance and collaboration. Initially this starts with using their voices expressively and creatively as part of a group. But the end of KS1, our intention is that children will be accomplished enough to perform a solo, either as part of a group performance or completely independently.
Our children learn to create and compose their own music primarily through improvisation. They are exposed to different genres of music through attending live performances given by professional musicians and through listening to a carefully chosen range of music in assemblies.

In Practice

Our music lessons are taught through performance; they always involve practical music making. All children, regardless or ability, gender, or background will be given the same opportunities to sing and play their instruments. They are all invited to additional afterschool sessions which can then lead to Saturday morning music schools. Our music lessons are all delivered by music specialists as we believe music is so important that it is only specialist musicians that can deliver the curriculum to the high standard our children deserve. We have termly concerts in school, and children all have opportunities to perform at other venues, both locally and nationally.
