Science
Intention
At Ling Bob School, we believe that all children should be able to confidently communicate their knowledge and ideas through their science work. Our science teaching aims to give all children an understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. We want the children to acquire a wide scientific vocabulary, a solid understanding of the science ‘Programme of Study’ as identified in the National Curriculum, be able to use their science investigation skills and effectively apply these throughout their time at primary school. Working scientifically skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school. All children are encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including observations, planning and investigations, as well as being encouraged to question the world around them and become independent learners in exploring possible answers for their scientific based questions. The curriculum and planning is adapted appropriately for those children with SEND so that skills and knowledge are developed alongside children’s confidence.
In Practice
Teachers create a positive attitude to science learning within their classrooms and reinforce an expectation that all children can achieve high standards in science. At Ling Bob School, we recognise that science is the basis for knowledge and understanding of the world and children begin their learning in this subject in the Early Years. Throughout school, children are encouraged to question, explore and discover the world around them. Some aspects of science are taught in multiple year groups and key stages, in line with the National Curriculum, to build on children’s prior understanding and knowledge, encourage retention of key information and increase their enthusiasm for science topics. Science investigations and enquiries are embedded throughout units and year groups to allow children to discover more about the knowledge they have acquired and the potential to observe it first hand. We try to link our science teaching to topic work to create cross curricular links where possible.
To further broaden our curriculum, we invite visitors into school (e.g. Polestar Planetarium) and plan research visits to support certain areas of learning.
We use a range of resources including websites such as ‘Explore’ and the ‘BP Education Service’ to encourage enthusiasm and questioning within science.
We hope children at our school will develop an understanding of science which will stay with them for life.
Outcome
When children leave Ling Bob School, they will be able to work with confidence across many areas of science. Children will have developed the knowledge, skills and understanding to help them access and investigate science in a safe and inquisitive way. Children will have developed skills that will lead them onto the specifics of physics, chemistry and biology at high school and equip them to be scientists throughout their lives.
